Hey, my name is Dan.
I am a Robotics/Mechanical Engineering PhD. from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. My research is a full-time job, it keeps my lights on. It's exciting yet frustrating, like all research. I think about everything, it can be as deep as "How can one fix America's judicial system?" or as simple as "Should I eat a sandwich?". If I'm staring off in space, you'll know.
I try to learn as much as possible and I have a passion for languages. Currently I'm on Arabic and Russian. I'm hoping to be competent enough to get around a city or help someone out who can't speak English well. I'm a nice guy. My time is at a premium, and I work very hard, even if it's mostly mental work. When I get free time, I usually just relax or sleep, but that's not what I want to do. I'd rather be enjoying my free time, but I'm not very clever at entertaining myself. I wish I helped out in my community more, but I don't. When I say "community" I mean any person in the world. I do try to donate some of my money to groups but I'd rather donate my time and expertise.
This isn't working...
Here are a few points that will hopefully elucidate my personality better.
I love a good conversation, whether politics or philosophy. I appreciate discussions, even about hypothetical situations.
I don't understand art 100%. I can appreciate skill and talent, but splattered ink paintings for thousands or millions of dollars confuses me.
I've done some photography apparently, I was good at it. I liked doing street photography more, but people really don't like having their pictures taken. So then you end up asking for permission then when they say sure you end up losing the candidness of the photo and they put their best duck face on just for you lolz.
Imagine in your head your typical bro or frat guy, I am the opposite.
I am shy. If I won't stop talking to you, it's because I like you. :-P
I try to use correct grammar when I write and talk, but I am an engineer and not an English scholar, so I make mistakes. If you see a mistake tell me. I'll give you a brownie point redeemable for one cupcake. Lulz.
I was raised briefly in Germany, where apparently, they use more British English than American English. My Mother was also raised in North Carolina, that said, there are some words I say or spell incorrectly from time to time. e.g. pecan, salmon, military, manufacture, colour, Illinois, and recognise.
I am very bad with faces. I can't tell the difference between Madonna, Fergie, or Taylor Swift, ok well maybe I can, but you get the idea.
I have a bow (not for hunting), I'm terrible with it. If you see my holding it, take cover.
I don't smoke or drink, and I never will. I don't have any problem with other people drinking socially, it's just not for me.
I like traveling. Especially OCONUS. I just rarely get the chance.
I'm very logical. I will analyse something from all angles before making a decision.
I've been described as a friendly lion. I guess my hair and facial hair can look like a mane. I'm cool with that, lions rock.
I can be a nerd. I often say things that I think are hilarious but then have to spend time explaining it, by then it's not funny. :-(
"I say some pretty cool things from time to time. I wish I could quote myself, but then I would just be talking." -me
I love Mitch Hedberg. If you can listen to him and laugh, we will get along just fine.
To ease my decision making with people, I usually suggest one person elect three options and then the other perosn gets to choose from those options. You'd be surprised how well that works.
I like biking and camping but never really get a chance to do them.
I just found out about Breaking Bad. I love it! Why didn't I know about this show sooner?!
For some reason I like project runway I can't tell what's going on but I can appreciate the capability of those designers. They are not far from us engineers. All the flashing lights and obnoxiously loud techno music captivates me.
If you read all that you're either bored or interested. Hopefully the latter. In that case you should know I am looking for something serious, but I understand everything starts small. I've heard about all the horror stories with online dating, I know it's rough for you girls. I'm not into playing games I am too serious about finding someone to be with to waste my time or yours. That said I will respond to all messages that I receive, but understand if I'm not interested I'll try to tell you in the kindest way possible. All I ask if if I message you, please return the favor even if it's to say " I don't think we'd click". It's not fun wondering if someone isn't interested. It only takes a second to be kind.

Conversation Starters (i.e. what you'd like to do on a first date...)
Well there are a lot of options. I prefere a simple coffee shop style get together even though I don't drink coffee. A nice cozy place, that isn't too quiet or too loud, helps make for good conversation.
