About Me
People describe me as confident, funny, knowledgeable, witty, open, articulate, analytical, warm, kind, quirky, endlessly curious, and genuine.
I eat a healthy diet and I'm very active (walk just about everywhere & in all seasons, play tennis in summer and cross-country ski in winter). I love to cycle off-road and I'd cycle a lot more on the streets but have this aversion to getting killed (yes, I'm a bike-riding Toronto pinko). I read a lot (newspapers/magazines, literature, psychology, science, history, environment, politics), love good film (mostly indie, docs, classics, or foreign, love Hitchcock, Coen Bros., Kubrick, Wenders). Music is my first love (alt rock (e. g. Arcade Fire, Decemberists, Sparklehorse) good folk/country, some jazz and classical) and I play guitar and love to sing. I love to cook too (for myself, for two, hosting dinner parties) and love food in general so I'm always open to trying a new restaurant and different ethnic cuisines. I love to travel to great cities, places of natural beauty, and to go off the beaten track.
I'm active politically in the Green movement, and skew pretty far to the left politically, so no neo-cons or old-school cons please. Opposites don't attract in my case. And similarities definitely do, in politics and just about everything else.
I love city dwelling (my hood Roncesvalles, also Junction, Kensington, etc) but my heart yearns for country/small town life, which I have experienced briefly and enjoyed, and hope to get back to one day. An old house and a big vegetable garden are always beckoning to me from my future (as long as a big city isn't too far away).
I have a great, big, sometimes rowdy family (I'm the quiet one and I ain't that quiet) and love to get together with them at the family cottage and holidays.
I'm very romantic, sensual and affectionate. I love expressing my positive feelings for my loved ones in words and deeds.
I'm an atheist who is seeking a sort of spirituality, not to mention greater wisdom and peace, through a nascent interest in Buddhism. I'm a big believer in the golden rule and endeavour to be kind, respectful and friendly to everyone.
People say I'm unique in the depth and breadth of my intellectual curiosity, my passion for things (the arts, environment and social issues), my sense of humour (I love to laugh and to make others laugh), and my honesty, down-to-earth-ness and genuine compassion/concern/caring for others.
Although in some ways the ultimate 'nice guy', I've definitely got an edge to my humour and my outlook on life.
My idea of a great date ranges from exploring a great city together (the architecture, museums, and galleries) and then topping it off with a great dinner; to a cycling picnic on the Toronto Islands- I've never done it but would love to one day. Another favourite date of the more homey variety is planning, shopping for, and creating an incredible meal together, with an equally wonderful bottle of wine, some stimulating conversation, and relaxing afterwards with a great film.
In a mate I seek someone ideally slim and fit, highly intelligent with a good sense of humour, some sense of adventure, shared tastes in film, reading, and music; and someone who is kind, easygoing and down to earth.
I hope it's you.
First Date
For this situation, I guess the first date should just be coffee or a drink. Otherwise, a great dinner and a walk and maybe some quiet music in a club also make a great first date. My ideal date (later) would be a cycling picnic on the Toronto Islands. I've never done it but would love to one day. Another favourite date, a little further down the line, is planning, shopping for, and creating an incredible meal together, with an equally wonderful bottle of wine, and some stimulating conversation, and relaxing afterwards with a great film.
