I moved to Manchester from Southern California about 4 months ago for work. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this UK lifestyle. Here's what I've learned so far:
-I have a "right cool" accent. At least according to the students I work with.
-Do not ask the bartender for water, even if you are slurring your words and have no business drinking any more alcohol. They will give you dirty looks.
-I should not wear red or blue in a pub during a football game in Manchester for fear of making many people angry.
-There are a lot of interesting people on public transportation. It is best to wash your hands thoroughly after use.
What else can you teach me to help me survive?
If I could think of one word to describe my life, it would be balanced. Here are a few examples:
*On any given weekend, you are equally likely to find me cuddling with my dogs on the couch, dancing on a table in Centre City or having a few pints with friends in a quiet pub.
*I take my job very seriously and work hard, but I also make time for letting loose, exciting adventures and just being a vegetable in my flat.
*On a regular basis I try to eat healthy food and work out, but I also occasionally enjoy deserts, cheese and alcohol (which I'm secure in saying will also prevent me from being a size 4...life is just too short and food is too good).
*I consider myself to be an intelligent individual and can hold my own in conversation, but I also enjoy watching mindless television each night to unwind. (I've figured out how to get American t.v. on my computer, and I couldn't be more excited.)
I debated on putting this part on here because I like to focus on the positive. That being said, here are a few tips just to help ya out:
*I brought my two dogs over 5000 miles to live with me here in Manchester. If you're not an absolute dog lover, we're probably not a match.
*E-mails like "I like your smile, profile, pictures, etc." are not likely to get my attention. Show me you've read my profile by writing something unique that you couldn't cut and paste to all of the other lovely ladies out there.
*I am not likely to respond to terms of endearment such as hun, sweetie, babe, or beautiful when you haven't even met me yet.
*Comments like "teachers get far too many vacations" are probably going to make me angry.
