About Me
Greetings -
I'm an optimist and a born romantic. I'm in my early 40s, and I'm looking for someone with similar interests as me - music, reading, politics, and so on. I'm a left/progressive, atheist, nonsmoker who values friendship and loyalty. I love to read and learn and talk about the world, from ancient times to now, about other peoples, cultures, and religions. I love learning about the universe, from the very small to the very large; from atoms to cells to whales to galaxies. And yes, I know I'll never know it all, but I think it's fun to try. I like to travel to see new places, which I realized I am better off doing NOW instead of when I'm 65. Recently I took a couple trips to NYC to for concerts and spent 5 days at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and I'm still not done (one more day, maybe two...) then it's the MoMA, Guggenheim... in 2012 I promised myself it's Paris and Madrid for the Louvre and the Prado.
Reading - lots of periodicals (Economist, Harper's, the Atlantic, The Nation, LRB, NYRB , etc.), non-fiction, politics, science, history, you name it. [I suspect if you know those magazine titles you'll guess my politics pretty easily.]
I love music - live concerts, or sitting at home with a CD on. I go to 20 or 30 concerts a year, hopefully you'll like some of the same stuff I do, but hey, I try to be open minded, so should you. My tastes can be a bit eclectic - classical music is fine, so is opera, but I've grown to love prog music over the years, from early Genesis to King Crimson, on to Porcupine Tree and others. I tend to jump all over the map - Rush, Blue Rodeo, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, the standard 'Canadiana' (a legacy of growing up in Toronto), but also Bonny Prince Billy, Billy Bragg, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, Cheap Trick, the great, the not-so-great, and the flat out cheesy. I love 'em all. I've driven or trained(?) to Montreal, New York, Chicago and Philly in the last few years to see acts - so totally worth it.
Fitness - in the last year I decided to get a grip and dieted and spent some serious gym time on getting into decent shape - lost a lot of weight and I intend to keep it off. Hopefully you're someone who also works out (maybe not as crazy as I got last year!) and we can do it together! [I really am 'average' frame at 5'10" 180#, I think? I went from an XL to an M, and from a 38" waist to a 31". So you do the math.
I was taking flying lessons at CYKZ Buttonville for a couple years, and I'll be taking it up again once I figure out how I can afford to buy a plane. But that's on hold for now and they're closing down Buttonville... sigh.
I'm smart, I have a finely tuned sarcastic sense of humour, I'm pretty decently well read, I like to make jokes that maybe not everyone else gets, sadly. If you think some of the above describes you, and you too love to learn and talk and laugh... come and see.
