A philosopher's school is a hospital. You should feel discomfort, not pleasure, in it, for on entering, no one is well and whole. One has a disjointed shoulder, another a wound, a third suffers from a cut, and a fourth has a headache. Am I then to sit down and give you a treatment of pretty words and empty sentiments, so you may applaud me and depart, with neither shoulder nor wound, cut nor headache, any better for your visit?
There is only one direction in which all space is open to us. We have faculities silently inviting us thither to endless exertion. We are like a ship in the river; we run against obstructions on every side but one, on that side all obstruction is taken away and we are sweeping serenly over a deepening channel into an infinite sea. Therefore, within eyeshot of the ocean, sea, perhaps a lake or river but preferably the sea. That is where my mindset would place us. It is useless to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into. Self-will is so ardent and active that it will break a world to pieces to make a stool to sit on. And, if we are seated together then let it at least be by the sea. Only women who are sincere and honest, and seeking a spiritual dialogue, need apply.
